Previous studies demonstrated that basic academic performance might be a reliable parameter to indicate the risk of dropout. However, it remains to elucidate whether basic English skills would be able to predict the academic outcomes of judo therapy school students. The objective of the study was to retrospectively compare the basic English skills evaluated by the firstyear English placement test between groups of the graduate and the dropout in the Department of the Judo Therapy and Sports Medicine, Ryotokuji Univerisity. Students who enrolled in the department between the academic years of 2011 and 2015 were divided into the graduate group (n=367) and the dropout group (n=83). The result of the English test taken before the first class was then compared between the two groups using Mann-Whitney’s U test (α < 0.05). The effect size was also calculated using r statistics. The median [min - max] score of the English placement test in the graduate group (68% [20% - 98%]) was significantly greater than that in the dropouts (60% [14% - 90%]) (z=3.86, P<0.001). Because the effect size of the comparison was small (r=0.18), however, the difference may not be practically important.
