However, in the movie Hairspray, more sequences of “and” plus a word beginning with a vowel were pronounced as [n] plus a vowel than [nd] plus a vowel, evidencing a different\nprevailing pronunciation in informal speech. Therefore, we aimed to examine how this sequence is pronounced in formal speech. Comparing Donald Trump’s nomination acceptance speech with the first Trump-Clinton presidential debate, we found that more than half of the target sequences were realized with the /d/ dropping and the /n/ being linked to the following vowel both in the speech and in the debate, and the difference between the two was not large.
