It would be safe to say that the fact that the starting point of his studies was Neo-Confucianism had a significant influence on Ansai's Japanology.  Among the various Shintoisms in early modern times, Ansai's Suika Shinto held an extremely unique status. Suika Shinto contains elements of the theory of li and qi found in Neo-Confucianism and, more specifically, the Song dynasty Cheng-Zhu school; in fact, one could say that it was conceived of on a base of Neo-Confucianism.\nIn particular, tsuchikane no tsutae (土金伝, “tale of earth and metal”) as a scholarly theory is an important clue in understanding the ideas purported by Ansai's Suika Shinto. Ansai saw earth (土) as the base element which created and composed all things. One can see that Ansai esteemed earth above all, and stressed the importance of it in addition to metal (金), which is born from earth. As earth creates all things, earth contains all things, and one finds commonalities with the concept of respect (敬).
